Choose the network first

Investigate Argus Eco Ultra when home Wi-Fi reaches your planned outdoor camera position. Investigate Go PT Ultra when Wi-Fi is unavailable but a supported mobile network works there and you accept data costs. A 4G camera is not a remedy for a location with no usable connection of either type.

Both routes require a charging plan. Their main buying distinction is the data connection, not a claim that one produces better wildlife footage.

When 4G solves a real problem

A mobile-data route can be useful when extending home Wi-Fi would be impractical. Before buying, give the supplier the exact UK/Europe hardware version, the proposed network and your planned use. Confirm compatibility rather than assume any SIM will work.

Test the relevant network at the actual site. A phone result is a preliminary clue, not a guarantee of camera performance. A weak or unsuitable signal remains a buying problem even if the camera is battery powered or the panel has good sunlight.

A card does not replace the connection for remote viewing

Local storage and remote access answer different questions. A card can hold triggered recordings, but it does not transport a live picture to your phone. For the 4G route, include data whenever you want that remote communication. For the Wi-Fi route, check the home internet and required app access.

If collecting clips later is sufficient, a simpler offline camera may meet the need without a network plan. See trail versus Wi-Fi cameras for hedgehogs before paying to solve a remote-viewing requirement you do not actually have.

The ongoing cost can change the decision

Illustrative arithmetic only: a data plan at an assumed £5 a month adds £60 in one year or £180 over three years. At an assumed £10 a month, those additions become £120 and £360. These are invented planning rates, not Reolink or carrier offers, and do not include a camera or predict how much data you will use.

Price the normal renewal rate and an allowance appropriate to your viewing and uploads. An introductory SIM offer should not be treated as a permanent running cost.

First-year and three-year costs

RouteFirst yearThree years
Wi-Fi battery cameraCamera/selected panel + card/missing parts + chosen annual charging/servicesUpfront equipment + three years of entered annual costs
4G battery cameraCamera/selected panel + card/SIM/missing parts + year-one data and other chosen costsUpfront equipment + three years of data and other entered annual costs

We have not verified numeric UK checkout prices for these models. Compare complete current quotes, including exactly which panel, card and SIM are supplied. Do not declare the cheaper total using a made-up hardware figure.

Use the setup-cost worksheet with current quotes. It separates one-off extras from annual costs. None of the examples establishes measured battery life, electricity use or a future service price.

Which should you investigate?

  • Usable home Wi-Fi: start with the Wi-Fi route and its full installation cost.
  • No home Wi-Fi, but verified compatible mobile coverage: investigate 4G only with an acceptable data budget.
  • No suitable network or no acceptable data plan: reconsider remote viewing or the camera position rather than force a match.

What we have not established

We have not tested these cameras. Published resolution, detection labels and weather ratings do not establish which will produce the most useful hedgehog clip in your garden. Ask for original night footage at a similar distance and check small-animal triggering, focus and playback before permanent installation.
