Our decision in brief

Start by investigating the Tapo C120 if you have usable Wi-Fi and can install its approved continuous power supply. Investigate the Argus Eco Ultra when a permanent cable is the obstacle and you can manage battery charging. If Wi-Fi does not reach the location, neither of these connection routes is the answer by itself.

This is a comparison of published requirements for a garden viewpoint, not a field-tested ranking of wildlife image quality.

The real difference is the installation

A power cable is useful when you want a camera to stay in one position and can maintain an approved supply. Check the whole route, including where the adapter and connections can be installed. An outdoor camera rating does not establish that all accessories can be left exposed.

Battery operation changes that installation job into a maintenance job. Decide whether you can reach the camera for charging and where a compatible panel could sit if you select one. Solar should be considered alongside available daylight and usage, not treated as a promise that charging will never be needed.

Continuous recording or selected events?

Choose the recording behaviour before comparing card capacities. If you want to retain the hours between visits, confirm the required continuous mode and storage settings. If you only want triggered clips, check whether the camera reliably detects the subject in time; a missed event cannot be recovered from a larger card.

Live viewing and recording are separate functions. Opening a live feed does not prove that the same period is being saved, and a battery camera’s live-view feature should not be read as an unlimited continuous broadcast.

Build equivalent baskets

  • For C120, confirm the UK camera, supplied power equipment and cable, then add a compatible card and any approved installation items.
  • For Argus, confirm the exact camera selection, card, charging equipment and whether the compatible panel and mount are included or extra.
  • Check the account, local recording and cloud-service terms for the features you intend to keep. A larger bundle or optional cloud plan should not be silently included on only one side.

First-year and three-year costs

RouteFirst yearThree years
C120Current camera quote + missing parts + one year of electricity/chosen servicesSame upfront parts + three years of entered annual costs
Argus Eco UltraCurrent selected-bundle quote + missing parts + one year of charging/chosen servicesSame upfront parts + three years of entered annual costs

The dated C120 reference is not a complete installed price or a promise of current availability. Because the Argus UK price is unverified, we cannot calculate a reliable purchase-price gap. Ask for an itemised quote rather than compare against a foreign-currency listing.

Use the setup-cost worksheet with current quotes. It separates one-off extras from annual costs. None of the examples establishes measured battery life, electricity use or a future service price.

Which should you investigate?

  • Continuous power is practical: investigate C120, then check your recording mode and safe installation.
  • A permanent cable is impractical: investigate Argus, with a realistic charging and maintenance plan.
  • No usable Wi-Fi: read the Wi-Fi versus 4G comparison before choosing either.

What we have not established

We have not tested these cameras. Published resolution, detection labels and weather ratings do not establish which will produce the most useful hedgehog clip in your garden. Ask for original night footage at a similar distance and check small-animal triggering, focus and playback before permanent installation.
